5 Basic tips to travel Guatemala

  1. Don't change currency at the airport! They charge 15% or more commision. If you need some Quetzales  (Guatemala´s currency), change $20 to pay a cab or something. If you are staying at Quetzalroo, the next day we will take you to a bank where commission is around 2%.
  2.  Act as if you where in the most dangerous part of your city. Unfortunately Guatemala (especially Guatemala City) can be dangerous. You can prevent being robbed (or lose less in case it happens) by acting smart with a few common sense techniques: Dont carry more than $80 or its equivalent in Quetzales at any given moment; Cameras and iPods are not to be shown around... keep them in the botton of your backpack; Only use Quetzalroo transport or Quetzalroo certified taxis.
  3. Drink enough water, dehydration is common in the jungles of the north (Tikal National Park or Semuc Champey). You can also hydrate with Gatorade, Powerade or by eating tropical fruit.
  4. Bring with you or buy mosquito repellent! Especially if you are going to the jungles of the north.
  5. If this is your first time in a third world country, you might get food poisoning. Nothing to worry about... it will be the worst 12 or 24 hours of your life, but you will be fine! If you want to minimise the risk of travelers diarrhea during the first days of your trip avoid fresh vegetables, the outside of fruit and raw food.
